Driving Questions: Why is the symbol for "zero" so important to our number system?

To explain how to add or subtract numbers with up to 4 digits.
Developing
To explain how to multiply a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number without using a calculator.

To calculate using division.

Starting with addition and subtracting on small numbers - practise using the pyramids and magic squares. Note that addition and subtraction are opposites.

Developing

Now we will use whiteboard to test and recap our understanding of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. 

Now introduce students to the idea multiplying numbers using the Chinese Multiplication Grid. 

Now move on to using the same methods for multiplying decimals.
